Uniting the Armenian Community for a Brighter Future
On May 30, 2024, Dr. Alex Balekian delivered a heartfelt and inspiring speech at the St. Leon Armenian Cathedral in Burbank, CA. The event, hosted by the St. Leon Ladies' Society, brought together members of the Armenian community for an evening of music and entertainment.
In his speech, Dr. Balekian, a native of Glendale and proud graduate of Chamlian and Hoover High schools, emphasized his deep roots in the community and his dedication to turning around the troubling trends he sees in California. He shared his frustration and determination, stating, "I've reached my breaking point, same as all of you have, that our home has turned from a golden state into a rusted brown."
Dr. Balekian highlighted the lack of Armenian representation in Congress, noting that there are currently zero Armenian members and only one candidate—himself—running for office. He pointed out the significant influence of foreign interests, such as Azerbaijan, which has spent $600,000 to sway members of Congress. "Where is our voice?" he asked, urging the community to unite and elect one of their own to truly represent Armenian interests.
He passionately called for the community to shift from relying on others to represent their interests to electing leaders from within the Armenian community. "It's time for us to elect one of our own and show them how it's done," Dr. Balekian declared, reinforcing his commitment to bringing genuine Armenian representation to Congress.
Dr. Balekian also expressed his gratitude for the support he has received so far and encouraged attendees to continue their efforts as the election approaches. "Our fight is not over," he said. "November 5th is the election. Together, we can do this." He also shared his appreciation for the evening's musical performances, stating,
"I am still humming the songs performed so amazingly by Arthur Mister X and Maestro Armen Martirosyan. Thank you to the St. Leon Ladies’ Society and Srpazan Hovnan Derderian for inviting me to experience an unparalleled night of music and celebration for the Diocese."
Following his speech, Dr. Balekian invited attendees to engage with him during the mingling reception, emphasizing his desire to connect with as many community members as possible and hear their concerns and ideas.
