Parental Rights Briefing #2: “National Coming Out Week is Excessive”

In our great state of California, it's crucial that we stay informed and engaged on pivotal topics, especially when it comes to the education of our children. Two subjects that recently caught my attention are AB665 and the Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) observance of National Coming Out Week. Let's delve into both to gain a clearer understanding.

AB665 is no small matter. It revolves around the right of minors, specifically those aged 12 and up, to consent to mental health treatment without parental approval. It's a profound question of where we draw the line between a young individual's autonomy, especially concerning their mental health, and the rights of parents in decision-making processes.

Then there's the decision by LAUSD to mark National Coming Out Week. This event, designed to support and bring awareness to the experiences of LGBTQ+ students, is one among several held throughout the academic year. While its intention of support and solidarity is clear, it's worth considering its place among the myriad of observances in our educational calendar.

In a recent video, I've shared my perspectives on these two issues. While I offer my thoughts, I urge you to view this as a starting point for deeper reflection and understanding. Let's think about our values, our community's priorities, and the way forward for our educational institutions.

I invite you to watch the video, absorb the insights, and then let's have a conversation. Because at the end of the day, it's through open dialogue that we build a brighter future for our children and our state.
